You asked us where you can volunteer around the holidays. ‘Tis the season for giving, after all. To reward your kind hearts, here’s a list of volunteer opportunities around Lou metro.
Holiday-specific 🦃
- Bless the Block | Change Today, Change Tomorrow is seeking volunteers — Nov. 29-Dec. 3 — to help sort, assemble + distribute materials at TEN20 Brewing from its gifting program. Email here to participate.
- Thanksgiving 2021 | Wayside Christian Mission needs volunteers to deliver food to homeless camps as it typically serves 3,000 meals on Thanksgiving Day.
- Turkey – and Ham – Drive | Donate a turkey or ham to St. Vincent DePaul to help them prepare holiday meals to-go. Call Angela Leavell at (502) 301-869 or email for more information.
- Christmas Drive | Help Catholic Charities of Louisville get ahead of the holiday rush by donating new toys, writing + delivering Christmas cards, gifting meals, and volunteering at its soup kitchen.

Year-round 📅
- Louisville Grows | This environmental nonprofit offers different ways to engage with urban forestry + agriculture all year long, including neighborhood tree planting, tree canvassing, greenhouse upkeep, and property maintenance.
- Dare to Care | Help feed neighbors around Kentuckiana at one of Dare to Care’s 300+ food pantries. Every volunteer hour served with the organization will be matched with a $10 donation from the Anthem Foundation.
- Kentucky Harvest | Pick up excess food and deliver it to those in the community in need. Kentucky Harvest delivers more than two million lbs of donated food to 86 organizations in Louisville + Southern Indiana each year.

- First Watch and LaRosa’s Pizzeria are opening a shop together at 10641 Fischer Park Drive in the old O’Charleys. It will be the Cincinnati-based pizza company’s first Louisville location, occupying 3,700-sqft. First Watch will take 3,900-sqft with an estimated cost of $350,000 for the buildout. - HGTV’s “Home Town Kickstart,” is coming to Oldham County to renovate a local home, upgrade a local business + energize a public space. La Grange is one of six cities that will be featured in the program, which is set to air in 2022. 🏠 (WKYT)
- If you see a big-top tent on the Big Four Lawn in a few weeks, you’re not imagining things. The Venardos Circus returns to Louisville Dec. 2-12 for the first time since 2019. The animal-free circus is a traditional show featuring jugglers, daredevils, magicians + acrobats. 🎪 (LEO Weekly)

- Gov. Andy Beshear has authorized COVID-19 booster shots for all Kentucky adults 18+. Booster shots are meant to increase immunity against the virus for those already vaccinated. - Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee. The Muhammad Ali Center hosted its Grand Opening Gala 16 years ago today. The $75 million cultural + educational center Downtown drew celebrity attendees such as former President Bill Clinton and actor Jim Carrey, in addition to the greatest himself. 🥊

- Churchill Downs was chosen by the Indiana Gaming Commission to build + operate a casino in Terre Haute, Indiana. Churchill Downs beat three other gaming companies racing for the opportunity + will invest $190 million into the Queen of Terre Haute Casino Resort. 🎰 (WDRB)

- Louisville has been named to the CDP’s “A List” for a second consecutive year. Derby City is one of less than 100 cities around the world to make the list, which is based on cities that disclose emissions, set emission reduction goals + have renewable energy targets for the future. ♻️
Feel Good
- A drive-thru party was held for an Eastern High School teen battling cancer. For his birthday, Brycen Doughty asked everyone who came to donate presents for kids in need this holiday season. Cars flooded the streets for two hours to drop off toys. 🎁 (WDRB)
