Hello Thursday. April 18 2024 While those 70 degree days were nice over the holidays, the winter winds are back to chill our bones, but just because it’s cold out doesn’t mean you have to hang up your sneakers until spring.
City-editor Katie took a winter hike to Gray’s Arch in Red River Gorge over the weekend. | Photo by @theloutoday 🥾 Winter hiking Hit the dusty cold trails this winter during one of Bernheim Forest’s guided Trail Discovery Hikes. There are two opportunities this month — the Pond Ridge Trail hike on Jan. 9 + the Elm Lick Loop trail on Jan. 22.
Be sure to register early for the First Sunday Nature Hike on Feb. 6. This engaging nature hike typically sells out and, later this month, bundle up for a walk under the Wolf Moon during the Louisville Nature’s Center’s Full Moon Hike on Jan. 17.
👟 Run + walk clubs Check out one of these five run + walk clubs that meet at local breweries. Who doesn’t love a pint after hitting the pavement?
🌳 Urban forestry Plant new trees this Martin Luther King Jr. day with Louisville Parks and Recreation on the corner of East Washington Street and South Floyd Street — near Louisville Slugger Field. New volunteers will work with experienced tree planters + all the tools and trees are provided. Register here.
Once you’ve mastered this art, look into becoming a Louisville Grows Citizen Forester and learn how to make a lasting impact on the tree canopy year round.
🏀 Get familiar with community centers Louisville has 14 community centers across the metro where you can play basketball and pickleball, square dance, or even try archery. Browse the center’s locations + activities here.

The Kaden Tower has stood as a Louisville curiosity along I-264 since opening as a life insurance office in 1966 — then called the Lincoln Tower.
The ornate latticework + Prairie style of architecture often leads people to misattribute the tower’s design to Frank Llyod Wright. While Wright's firm was responsible for the design of the building, it was his son-in-law, William Wesley Peters, who oversaw the project.

Editor's Pick: One of my 2022 goals is to learn more about wine. I’ll definitely be taking advantage of Nouvelle’s wine classes — like the Port & Chocolate class coming up on Jan. 31 — in my quest to become an amateur sommelier.
