By the numbers š
Hereās how Kroger gave back to the community on a national scale in 2021:
- $16.4 million: Grant dollars Kroger gave to 370 nonprofit organizations in 24 states to fund multiple avenues of community support.
- 30,000: Volunteer hours by store engagement teams at organizations near to their hearts.
- 640 million: Meals Kroger directed (in addition to funds) to nonprofits. Since 2017, theyāve directed 1.6 billion meals to communities in need.
- 100%: Percentage of proceeds donated by customers and associates that went directly to each charitable organization (bonus: all 100% tax deductible).
Krogerās local impact š½ļø
From supporting food pantries on college campuses to partnerships with local businesses and organizations, Kroger is committed to helping the people live better lives in the communities they serve. Hereās how:
- Kroger Community Rewards: Shoppers can add a local organization to their Kroger Shopperās card and Kroger will donate to that organization ā at no cost to the consumer. $3.6 million is raised annually through this initiative.
- Zero Hunger | Zero Waste: To honor Krogerās company-wide commitment to creating communities free of hunger and waste by 2025, this program redirects food, funds, and products so less goes into the trash + more goes into the hands of community members who need it.
- Honoring local veterans: As a way to thank veterans for their service, Kroger works with organizations like the USO and Warrior Homesteads. Plus, Kroger has hired 45,000 veterans since 2009.
- In-store healthcare clinic: Kroger is investing in community health + wellness through their in-store clinic with Board-Certified healthcare providers available for diagnostic treatment and prevention (think: illnesses, screenings, minor injuries + more).

The buildings to be redeveloped on Lampton Street for the new brewery + distillery. | Photo by LOUtoday
|
The Merchantās Ice Tower property at 801 Logan St. in Smoketown is set to become a new distillery + brewery.
The $12 million project will be redeveloped in two phases ā the first of which will actualize Trellis Brewing Co. + the second will introduce Ferncliff Distillery.
Here are some quick details on the project:
- The distillery will be developed by Beargrass Development + Kyle Jahn is the registered agent on the brewery development.
- Ferncliff Distillery was a circa-1870 distillery that operated on the same site at 930 Lampton St. + once reopened, it will be a small, craft distillery.
- The Schaefer-Meyer Brewing Co. also operated on this site in 1889 + produced 50,000 barrels of beer each year.
- Beargrass Development is seeking $10 million in industrial revenue bonds from the city for the project.
- Beargrass Development is working with the Smoketown Neighborhood Association to craft a community benefits agreement ā a contract requiring developers to provide certain amenities or mitigations to the community.

Editor's pick: Hollywood can be a real zoo, which must be why Ethan Hawke traded it in for the real deal here in Derby City. Heās following in the footsteps of Master P + Katy Perry, whoāve also visited the zoo in recent months.
Heās been in more recent films than this, but my favorite role of his was as Troy Dyer in āReality Bitesā (1994) with Winona Ryder + Ben Stiller ā itās one of my comfort films.
